Raúl Artiles explores today’s drawing with the legendary technique of dry charcoal –that rough natural material which he juxtaposes on the surfaces he assaults, scratches or over which he marks a point of explosion / implosion.
The artist understands the act of drawing as a challenge that makes him untie himself from all known references to represent whatever exceeds him as an image consumer. But he is not just «any image consumer»: he is the one that stays static during the interval in which images get broken, and break our own gaze, filling us with amazement.
The exhibition shows Artiles’ newest work. The artist offers us a vision subsequent to the destruction of all images of comfort as a gesture of nonconformity of the unclassifiable generation he belongs to. Before our eyes he displays several possibilities as to how far drawing can go as a contemporary language.
Raúl Artiles was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1985. He got his degree in Fine Arts at the University of La Laguna and at present lives in Munich, Germany.
