Myriam Mihindou is a Franco-Gabonese artist born in 1964 who works with photography, drawing, video, sculpture and performance. Her work is attached to the places, experiences and energies that she encounters on her travels in Gabon, Egypt, Réunion, Haiti, Europe, Senegal, or the Canary Islands. She has always been interested in the concept of borders, the boundaries of geographic and psychological spaces that have been inherited from the past. In this sense, her work is both political and cathartic, working on matters of power — colonial, patriarchal or matriarchal power; the power of an individual within society; the power of a community within its natural environment.

Her visual language is rooted in powerful materials with an inherent symbolic or physical burden, which the artist uses to become part of the movements and axes of a thought committed to the living. Materials such as cotton, soap, leather, copper and salt carry the memory of lands and beings, and the artist fills them with theoretical activation that represents the importance of caring and healing through the creation of cathartic representations and images.

For this exhibition, entitled Le Théâtre des Mémoires, the artist occupies the space of the CAAM as if it were a place to be inhabited. As with the method of loci — a mnemonic device used since Antiquity that involves visualising oneself walking through a palace, or here a theatre, where we have previously associated the doors, seats, costumes or thresholds with ideas, words or figures — one will always be able to find the thread of one’s memory.

The images of Myriam Mihindou carry a memory, a memory that is older than us, while also creating a memory to repair, heal and try to free us, just like a smuggler of souls.
