Exposición 'Concrete wounds (Herida concreta)' de Karlo Andrei Ibarra

Karlo Andrei Ibarra (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1982) is a Puerto Rican artist of international renown who works across a range of disciplines. His work addresses and questions political and social issues, with broad poetic and literary resonances.

The artist’s creative output, manifested in the form of objects, sculptures, installations and photography, can be situated within the domain of visual poetry, informed by conceptual approaches.

Ibarra’s work encompasses the symbolic power of objects and materials, as well as that of words. His native Puerto Rican context is particularly significant, given the crucial role of language, including bilingualism between Spanish and English, in understanding the history and contradictions of his country.

Concrete Wounds /Herida concreta is used to describe not only the physical wounds suffered by the island’s population because of its political history, in its “social body”, the extractivism that has occurred on the island, and the expansive and intensive policies of the tourism industry, but also the psychological and emotional wounds that have been inflicted upon the island because of colonisation-decolonisation, globalisation and geopolitics. These processes have affected the identity and configuration of a social, political and cultural space. This project’s development has therefore incorporated areas of confluence between Puerto Rico and the Canary Islands.

“Concrete” in English is used to refer to something tangible, as evidenced by being a synonym of cement, which is capable of both healing and closing wounds. However, it is also used to describe the act of burying the memory of the past.

We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Karlo Andrei Ibarra for his unwavering commitment and dedication to this exhibition, as well as to Diego Suárez’s invaluable support and contributions (ATM Galería).
